Now In Technicolor: Retiring the Myth of Nude Bras

The moment Dorothy steps from the drab, dusty monochrome of her tornado blown house into the vibrant land of Oz remains cinematically iconic. This strange new world drips with color, from the sickly green of the wicked witch and shining glow of the yellow brick road to the entrancing red of our protagonist’s coveted ruby slippers. If we were to remember nothing else from The Wizard of Oz it would be how it brought bold, beautiful colours to the big screen. In a world of colour, why limit yourself to a wardrobe that contains bras in a colour palette only auntie Em would find pleasing?
Old Rules, New World
If bra fitters have heard anything above all else, it’s the phrase “I hate bra shopping!” followed closely by “do you have anything in nude?” We do, of course, have nude bras because it’s important to stock what your clients are looking for. Does that mean you need to buy a nude bra? Maybe even a white or black one? Absolutely not!
The reason women seek out nude bras – in this case nude meaning anything in light tan or peachy tones – is always the same: they need it to go under light or white tops. Often this request simply comes from the fact… “that’s what they’ve been told by their mother who was told the same by their grandmother” and so on. Wanting to wear a bra under your top that doesn’t have the colour show through is completely reasonable. Rarely would we recommend a lime green number beneath your mermaid cut wedding gown. However, the key issue here is not the colour itself but the colour underneath showing through. In that case, we’re here to tell you that nude is not your only option for this problem.
Seeing Red
One of our favourite moments in the change room is when we have someone try on a wearable red bra. The look we get from our clients is the same shock Dorothy showed looking out into Oz. They can’t believe you can wear red under white and not see it! That’s our little touch of movie magic showing you that there are other options out there. It all comes down to our eyes, how they see light and color, and individual skin tone. We may not be scientists, but we know what we see and we know what works.
Wearable reds can range from scarlet to deeper wine reds and burgundies. Blue greys can also vanish under white clothes alongside certain purples and some pinks. Will every colour work the same way for every skin tone? No, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. If you’re on the paler side a brighter red might not completely vanish so maybe try a rose pink or a darker blue-red instead. Your bra drawer has the potential to look so much more exciting alongside being functional, we promise.
Feeling Supported
Often, the biggest obstacle for women in finding the right bras is unfortunately, the woman staring back at you in the mirror. There are so many narratives running in our heads, so many statements-turned-rules, so many internalized anxieties that we get shackled by them. All these self-imposed blockages keep us from answering the one question that truly matters: Does what I’m wearing make me happy?
YOU are the most important person who sees YOUR bra. Not a partner or a trusted friend or Dr. Once-A-Month. YOU. Feeling supported comes down to more than just wires and seams. How you see yourself and what you put on your body will lift you up higher than any bra we could hope to put you in.
Give yourself a chance to see the world in colour and glow brighter as a result. We’re sure Judy Garland would approve.
